- We look awesome and that’s how we feel. I had an impression that we are an independent distinctive regiment of the Field Marshall Rommel’s Desert Armoured Division, mainly because of the bicycle’s weight and the number of luggage items – claims Piotr Sudoł, one of the participants of the expedition “afrykanowaka.pl.
- The desert will extract all from you – warned us one of the Cracow Geophysics workers who hosted the cyclists while offering a quick dinner at parting . Finally they set out. No return. In the afternoon, the 8th of November they left Tripoli starting the great odyssey following the Kazimierz Nowak’s route. – We got stuck here for a few days arranging a milliard of things: Nowak’s commemorative plaque, local mobile phone, social meetings dedicated to the popularisation of our Guru with the Embassy Counsellor, the compatriots, money withdrawal from the local cash points for the bloodthirsty tourist agency, photos, films, interviews, radio reports, equipment replenishment – in one word: madness – reports Piotr Sudoł. Just the day before, the Poles were sitting in the unique Libyan antiquarian bookshop, nearby the former Piazza Italia – the so-called place in Nowak’s days and the Italian colonisation. They were telling the story of the pre-war cyclist to the owner Mohammed Ali Elbakhabakh who was listening with flushed cheeks. The fascinated antiquarian allows to hang in his shop the Nowak’s commemorative plaque – the first on the route. Its geographic coordinates: N 32° 53.564′ ; E 13° 10.871′. It’s not so easy in the travel agency which is patronising the expedition. The Tuareg of a hippopotamus appearance smacks, shouts, throws scraps of paper. Theatrically he tries to explain that… it’s impossible to cross Libya by bicycle, and if we want to make it possible it will cost a bomb. It turns out that the cyclists are to be followed in the desert by an obligatory agency car and the service will cost 3000 euro and the double amount in dinars. Finally the Tuareg shakes the cyclists hands and gives them the Sahara desert pass. Elfadel – a Libyan (Mauritanian by birth) joins the three Polish cyclists so that to guide the expedition through Sahara.
- We are a little bit worried about him – admit the boys. Elfadel during the first stage stopped 5 times and 4 times made his dramatic decision to continue the route. He also vomited 4 times. 20 kilometres before the finish line he moved to the car with his bicycle. He seemed tortured. – Today we covered our first 60 kilometres – says Piotr. – Only a thousand times the same distance and we are on the spot. Kazik – how did you do that? Who or what gave you the strength and motivation for such a gigantic route. Through the next 725 days, continuously, the participants of Afryka Nowaka will try to understand that. There are still 39 940 kilometres to the end of the expedition – piece of cake!
Boooże..taki nakład 34kg+rower+masa wycieczkowicza..to musi być katorga!
Ale,skoro paredziesiąt lat wcześniej Kazimierz Nowak tego dokonał,to Wam również życzę tego samego. Gratulacje i silnej woli życzę!
